e-MPAT Lab (English)

Zespół badawczy e-MPAT Lab (e-Mindfulness, Psychotherapy and Technology Lab, Laboratorium Badań nad Uważnością, Psychoterapią i Technologią)

The e-MPAT Lab brings together researchers from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw, alongside collaborators from national and international institutions. Our scientific interests lie in psychotherapy, mindfulness, compassion, and technology, with a strong focus on their interactions. In particular, we:

  1. Develop innovative methods to support diagnosis, therapy, and human functioning through the use of the internet, artificial intelligence (AI), and new technologies (e- Mental Health).
  2. Examine the effectiveness, sides effects, processes, and mechanisms of psychotherapy, with special attention to therapist–client synchronization. We also design and evaluate online interventions, such as mindfulness training and other technology-assisted forms of psychological support.
  3. Investigate the impact of digital technologies on mental health, including challenges related to digital addictions.
  4. Advance contemplative science, with a focus on meditation, mindfulness, and compassion.
  5. Study psychotherapists’ competencies using novel technological approaches.
  6. Engage in psychedelic science, especially in its connections to psychotherapy and contemplative research.
  7. Explore applications of AI in mental health and wellbeing, emphasizing usability and real-world implementation.

Our research employs a broad range of methods, including traditional psychological assessments, daily diaries, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), psychophysiological measures, as well as digital data analysis and AI-driven approaches.

Researchers: Hubert Suszek, Szymon Szumiał & Paweł Holas.
Other projects:
  • Skills in Psychotherapy Project. We conducted a project to evaluate the effectiveness of our proprietary training program, Psychotherapy Skills Training (30 hours), based on the deliberate practice approach. The evaluation covers four recorded 30-minute meetings (two before and two after the training) in the form of simulated therapy sessions. The analyses concern the questionnaire results obtained from people in the role of psychotherapist and patient, as well as transcripts of the sessions. The analysis was carried out in cooperation with, among others, Dr. Jan Wieczorek and Dr. Krzysztof Hwaszcz from the CLARIN-PL Language Technology Center at the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the Wrocław University of Technology. CLARIN (in Poland: CLARIN-PL) is a European research infrastructure supporting digital humanities and social sciences, offering tools and language resources, including the Inforex program, which was used to analyze the transcripts of the recordings. The study is complete (57 participants), and work on publications is currently underway.
  • Project Synchrony. As part of the project, we conducted a study of therapeutic conversations. The sessions were recorded using three cameras and subsequently analyzed with iMotions software, which enables automatic assessment of facial emotional expressions — used here to examine emotional synchrony. In addition, we applied Motion Energy Analysis (MEA) to evaluate body movement synchrony. Publications presenting the results of the project are currently in preparation.
  • Effectiveness of Internet Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (iMBCT) for Tinnitus www.terapiawszumach.pl. Weronika Caban, Paweł Holas & Gerhard Andersson (Linköping University).
  • The effects of short meditation as a means of reducing cognitive deficits in people with symptoms of depression. Team members: Dr. Anna Orylska and Prof. Grzegorz Sędek, PhD, at the Faculty of Psychology, SWPS University, and Paweł Holas, PhD (Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw).
  • CompassionAI – participation in a consortium (HORIZON-HLTH-2025-01 grant application) whose goal is to create compassionate AI. Compassionate artificial intelligence is “deeply rooted, human-centered intelligence that understands and supports the whole person.” It is an approach that combines the principles of Western rationality and Eastern wisdom to support meaningful development and relationship building. Its application is broad, but in the first phase, we are focusing on healthcare needs in this area.
  • SecondBrain – Collaboration on a health project to create a medical device offering, among other things, a range of functionalities to support everyday health care. This is AI-based intelligent medical software that will support both patients and medical staff in diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring processes.
Other:
  • Participation of team members (Paweł Holas and Rafał Styła) in a consortium within the Society for Psychotherapy Research – The European Psychotherapy Consortium (EPoC).
  • Participation of team members (Paweł Holas and Rafał Styła) in the work of the Coalition for Psychotherapy, and in the work of the Commission for Research Initiatives in Psychotherapy
  • Study visit (May 23-27, 2023) by team members (Paweł Holas, Rafał Styła, and Patryk Roczon). The visit, financed by the Research University Excellence Initiative (IDUB), took place at the University of Trier in Germany with Prof. Wolfgang Lutz's team.
