Zapraszamy na spotkanie z serii seminariów klinicznych, które odbędzie się w dniu 5 listopada 2023 roku (wtorek) w godzinach 15.20 – 16.20, w sali 412 na Wydziale Psychologii.

Gościem będzie dr Sat Bir Khalsa, profesor medycyny na Harvard Medical School.

Temat wystąpienia to Yoga for Mental Health Conditions: The Science and Research Evidence. 

Abstract

Yoga is an ancient behavioral practice incorporating physical exercises and postures, breath regulation, meditation, and relaxation strategies for the promotion and maintenance of health and wellness, but it is now also being increasingly applied as an adjunct therapy in both medicine and psychiatry.  This presentation will overview the basics of yoga practice, its current popularity for both wellness and medicine and the growing body clinical research that is demonstrating its efficacy in a wide variety of common conditions including chronic stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia.  Specific research results relevant to anxiety and insomnia will also be presented.

Short bio

Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, Ph.D. has been engaged in biomedical research on the efficacy of yoga and meditation practices in improving physical and psychological health since 2001.  He has practiced Kundalini Yoga since 1971 and is a certified instructor.  He is the Director of Research for the Kundalini Research Institute, a Research Associate at the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, a Research Affiliate of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He has conducted clinical research trials evaluating yoga interventions for insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic stress, and anxiety disorders, and also for adolescents in public schools and workers in occupational settings. He works with the International Association of Yoga Therapists to promote research on yoga and yoga therapy as the chair of the scientific program committee for the annual Symposium on Yoga Research and as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy.  He is chief editor of the medical textbook The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care, co-editor of the textbook The Principles and Practice of Yoga for Children and Adolescents, and medical editor of the Harvard Medical School Special Report An Introduction to Yoga.
